Snug at first is correct. The natural calf leather lining will soften and bed in over the first few wears. Some initial snugness across the forefoot is expected and normal.

Wide forefoot or high instep? Consider ordering one full size above your usual size. The leather will mould with wear but does not stretch significantly across the width.

Full grain calf (Brown). Brush after each wear with a horsehair brush, working along the grain. Every three to four wears, wipe with a slightly damp cloth, allow to dry naturally, then apply a thin layer of leather conditioner followed by a colour-matched wax polish, such as JW Premium Wax Polish. The textured surface takes cream polishes especially well.

Storage. Insert cedar shoe trees after wearing to hold the shape and draw out moisture, and allow at least 24 hours between wears. Store away from direct heat and sunlight.
